January 21, 2009Revolutionary Road exposes us to two exceptionally fine actors who tend to impact us emotionally in ways we would not expect. Is it true that life in suburbia can seem hopeless and empty for those who feel they must exile themselves there? This married couple bought their pretty home in the suburbs thinking they had little choice in the matter. Had they moved there with more good feelings about it would this have altered the outcome?
The movie is upsetting because we expect that it not just April and her husband who are so undone by this seemingly idyllic lifestyle. It calls to question our choices about our own lifestyles and whether they are really right for us.
This is really a very well acted powerful movie that has a lot to say about how we choose to live our lives. It can be painful to watch but is profound in ways we not longer expect from Hollywood. Any Oscars given will be well deserved. Phyllis Hartt
