Deep Impact (1998) - Movie Review

1998 is the year of destruction movies, and New York seems to get the brunt of it. Godzilla stumbles through it, Deep Impact submerged it, and Armageddon bombards it. And within two months of each other, giant meteors threaten to strike the Earth, and the question is: Which movie is better?

Obviously, I saw Deep Impact first, because it came out first, and luckily it came out first. If it had come out after Armageddon, it would have been crushed. But really, Deep Impact is a better movie than Armageddon, even though I gave them the same rating. The problem is that Armageddon gave the audience an action-packed, loud, and high-tech film, which appeals to more people, while Deep Impact delivers a dramatic, touching film, with a much better explosion at the end. The best part about Deep Impact is that it actually lives up to its name...

Supported by an all-star cast, from Robert Duvall to Morgan Freeman to Elijah Wood to Téa Leoni, acting is about as good as it gets. The story and dialogue is excellent, dealing with how the people of the world are accepting the fatal truth. Armageddon glances at the people of the world, which Deep Impact unfortunately does not, but Deep Impact looks more intensely at life in America.

In my older review, I said "the graphics are stunning and destructive." They are definitely destructive but no where as stunning as Armageddon's. The space graphics are pretty good, but the tidal waves at the end could have looked better. Nevertheless, they looked good enough.

Deep Impact lagged in parts, and is more emotional than graphical, but overall, it delivers a more realistic production than Armageddon.
