Gods and Generals, by W. Douglas

By , February 4, 2004

I recently rented the DVD of Gods and Generals and watched everything twice. It wasn't the action packed film one expected, but it certainly gave an insight to the southern perception of what the civil war was about that is lacking in many civil war movies. I am not a civil war scholar, but I found the movie to be very moving and enjoyable. I enjoyed the fact that it focused on just a few characters. The civil war is just too large of an event in our history to attempt to focus on everything. Giving us a glimpse of just a few people involved and its affect on their lives was just right. I eagerly await the release of Last Full Measure, and have every intention of reading all of the books.

My last posting should have given the movie an A and not a D.

I watched the movie before I heard anyone's opinions on it, and I loved it. I read the Shaara trilogy--they're some of my all-time favorite books. When I started researching the movie more seriously, I was shocked to see the negative reaction. I guess, as others have stated, this just isn't a mainstream-appeal movie. You have to understand and enjoy the Civil War to appreciate its power.

Be it that the graphics of this film were not the best, the portrayal of the characters was great. The imitation of General Thomas Jackson was exact. Some people think that the movie put too much stress on him being so pious, but that was the way he was. He was extremely religious and it had a huge affect on his men. Also, the character of Jeb Stuart was played to perfection. Although he appeared only in a small scene, it captured just how flamboyant he really was. Although it will never be considered a great theatrical picture(it shouldn't be), it's historical benefits are endless for anyone who is interested in the Civil War. Gettysburg was also on the level of this historical caliber and I also hope the third and final film will be just as good.

Probably one of the best of its kind. If you want to be entertained with an accurate portrayal of the early Civil War period, this is for you. If you want blood and guts and nothing but blood and guts, then you may be bored. Personally, this has become one of my all-time favorite flicks - no politically correct Hollywood crap here, like the awful Scarlet Letter of a few years back, and no swearing or sex either. I am greatly anticipating the third part of the trilogy, The Last Full Measure.

It was a great movie for those of us who could understand and respect the civil war. Gods and Generals was about the civil war, not no-stop fighting, blood and guts, and amazing stunts. If you are expecting some high paced, no-stop action film watch another movie. You should watch it if you are interested in the civil war.

God, if a movie has Jeff Daniels, and the story is about war, and it's a four hour movie with a intermission, you know thats your sign to stay away. Excited, yet?
