In Dreams (1999) - Movie Review

In what could be one of the weirder movies of the year, Annette Bening plays a mother who has visions of a psychopathic killer that kills littled kids in In Dreams. Her own daughter falls victim to the killer, played by Robert Downey, Jr., and she ends up going crazy as the visions continue to tormet her. It ends up she is seeing the near future of what the killer sees, but that may not help her.

In Dreams is a heart pounding and suspenseful thriller with the likes of Annette Bening and Robert Downey, Jr. The acting is good and Downey plays a good psychopath; Bening plays a good crazy person. It is hard to describe this movie other than to say that there is a lot of direct foreshadowing that adds to the suspense of the movie. Her dreams show the future but are not always interpreted correctly, as she eventually finds out.

The filming in In Dreams is incredibly strange but also very unique. The way the dreams come, in sort of a mutating look, is definitely interesting, and the dream sequences are also well down. I liked how the dreams are tied in with what happens in real life, but not always how you would expect them to.

The only disappointing thing about In Dreams was the last fifteen or twenty minutes. After building up everything, In Dreams turns into a normal killer-chase-victim type of movie. Bening runs from Downey and that's about it. But the ending also is rather unconventional compared to most movies, in terms of who lives and who dies. And the dénouement seemed sort of unnecessary, and sort of a copy from Candyman.

Still, In Dreams is well worth a one-time watch. The acting, filming techniques, and originality of most of the movie is definitely worth it.
