Love and Basketball (2000) - Movie Review

Chick flicks go to a new level with Love and Basketball, combining the romance that women love with a little thing that guys love... sports.

Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps star in this enjoyable and realistic film about two basketball stars as they grow up and move in different directions, while clinging to the love that they both share. As their relationship goes through ups and downs their careers do the same, and the movie explores both aspects.

This is the second Omar Epps movie that I have seen in a row that is worthy of watching again (the other being The Wood, which, much like Love and Basketball, was unnoticed in the box office). Love and Basketball is just a good movie. It has lots of funny moments, lots of romantic moments, lots of sexy moments, lots of serious moments, and lots of basketball.

This is the closest thing to a non-chick flick chick flick, meaning that both guys and girls will like it. Those vehemently opposed to chick flicks probably still won't like it, but Love and Basketball is a step in the right direction.

The movie has good acting all around, and Sanaa Lathan especially does a good job. The characters have over ten years to develop, giving the actors plenty of situations to work with. I really liked the romantic interaction of the characters; the two stars have a lot of chemistry together.

Love and Basketball is an extremely enjoyable film. It's a good one to watch in mixed company, and a good one just to watch anyway.
