Though I must say that this has become one of my favorite movies, I would recommend the book first because the book can show you things that the movie cannot. Either way, see it or read it, it's worth it.

Laurence Fishburn is fantastic in this movie. He has been inadvertenly left out. The color of the movie has a blue tint. This is to add to the dreary mood and add to the darkness of the film. Eastwood also composed all the music to this film. No small feat. The symbolism is used well. The composition is done well emphasizing character traits. Thanks and enjoy....

Hair Color, by Someone Who Knows

This is in response to Marion's question about the color of Jimmy's hair. I actually know the kid who played the young Jimmy. The reason they chose a red head to play Jimmy was, he originally tried out for the role of Sean, Kevin Bacon, (which would make more sense because his hair is brown), but he was so good that Eastwood chose him for Jimmy.

I found it puzzling that Jimmy -- who was a red-haired youngster -- morphed into a grown man with coal-black hair, grey at the temples. This would be extremely rare. Why not faded reddish brown, with some grey sprinkled in? There must be some logical reason that Clint Eastwood chose to portray him this way.

Despite the mediocre cinematography there is some incredible acting in this movie that makes it quite enjoyable. In fact, I really enjoyed much of this film right up until the point I realized it hadn't ended. After an extensive build-up that brought the story to a very logical and believable conclusion... it just kept going and started unraveling. The last three minutes play out like snippets from other movies, with an underdeveloped side story suddenly finding a happy ending and uncharacteristic behavior from well-developed characters. Whatever message was being presented lacked visual cohesion. Poor choices in photography and story development could only be carried so far by great acting. This film eventually showed itself as having too many holes and an overall lack of vision.
