Notting Hill (1999) - Movie Review

Britain's top grossing movie of all time is Notting Hill, a heartwarming and hilarious romance comedy starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts.

Hugh Grant is a lonely bookstore owner who just happens to run in to, and gets involved, with a big time star, played by big time star Julia Roberts. While I doubt Julia Roberts goes around sleeping with British bookstore owners, she delivers a believable performance as the awfully kind fifteen million dollar actress. Anna Scott, her character in the movie, is rather nice for a big shot star, but oh well. Hugh Grant continues to give us a loveable, stuttering character whom I never grow tired of (every movie I've seen him in I've liked).

The best part of the film, from a guy's perspective, is that this movie is just hilarious. Notting Hill is filled with comedy; every line is funny. Grant's roommate, Spike (Rhys Ifans) does a superb job as the idiotic, bum of a... roommate. There are a lot of background jokes as well.

From a women's perspective (judging from my mother's absolute adoration of the movie), the comedy is great and the romance is good as well. The relationship between Grant and Roberts has its ups and downs, but, of course, it ends up well enough.

Notting Hill is one of the best romance comedies I have ever seen.
