The Opposite of Sex (1998) - Movie Review
To put things another way, The Opposite of Sex is a funny and intriguing comedy that stands out among the rest with great performances, witty narration (literally) and a plot that gets better with every passing minute. The movie takes many jabs at the stereotypical romantic comedies we have all grown to despise (yet still watch), with Ricci's character pointing out how not all movies have to be about summers that change our lives forever, or about weepy characters, or even nice characters. Ricci, in many ways, has landed one of her best roles ever, and she really is not nice by any stretch of the imagination.
Kudrow and Donovan are also very good in their respective roles. Kudrow, who I find to be annoying in most things she is in, is pretty good here - this is probably her most enjoyable performance to date. Donovan, who recently appeared in another clever comedy calls Saved!, works well, though at times it is hard to relate to his character as he seems a bit weak-minded at times.
For all of you who are sick of the standard, fill-in-the-blank comedies, The Opposite of Sex may be the film for you.
