Movie Review

Grade: B Leonardo DiCaprio returns to the big screen in The Beach, a very twisted, psychedelic, psychological "thriller." First off: Forget the previews. The movie trailers for The Beach are about as misleading as they get. They represent the first portion of the film, where everyone is happy and having fun, but beyond that, the movie is free to twist your mind. From the previews, it is told that the paradise ends, but not in anyway that you'll think of. Read the full movie review

The Beach, by David Brown

October 27, 2003

The Beach is an awesome film. I have read the book and seen the film, and while some things have changed I was thoroughly impressed with how it turned out. The story is something everyone can relate to if one is willing to admit it to themselves that they enjoy mystery and intrigue. The location was utterly jaw-dropping and the cast was stellar. DiCaprio was almost dead on with his impression of Richard the hero or villian of the film depending on one's interpretation. The stand-out performances in the film were by Virgine Ledoyden as Francious. I utterly fell for the french beauty who is both jaw droppingly beautiful, but is a good actress as well. In an age of no account actresses like J-lo getting top billings for total box-office bombs at least get the french beauty in on a few more films. She may even be able to prove that so-called singers turned actresses aren't always the best choices for big time Hollywood productions. The other knock out performance was by the fellow who played Keaty. Keaty was an underrated charachter in the book and was elevated in the film. All in all I was really pleased with the film, with the exception of the "game scene" where Richard is playing with the Thai dope farmers. That could have been better researched, but beyond that I was and will remain a fan of this movie and book. Go read Alex Garland's The Beach...and go see the film.
