May 10, 2004I think this movie isn't so much about surfing as it is about a film about realizing potentials in life. It was marketed as a surfing film, and it's understandable why people who go to see it because of that would be a bit disappointed. But if you want a cool, smart, indie film, it's right on target. Shot "mockumentary" style, it follows brand-new journalist Kat (played by the hot Marguerite Moreau)on her quest for legendary surfer The Monk. It's a comic farce in some spots, love story in others, and I greatly recommend it.

May 9, 2004I've seen just about every surf movie released so I honestly can say this movie is the worst surf movie ever made. The plot was a good idea but the characters are so cheesy they become annoying. There are good scenes of big wave surfers but anyone can view these at web sites dedicated to big wave surfing.
I rather rent Gidget goes Hawaiian then sit through Off the Lip again.

May 7, 2004Robert Mickelson's daring directoral debut skillfully combines genre's in this surprising and delightful comedy. Although marketed as a "surf" film, "OFF THE LIP" is more accurately categorized as a "mockumentary" that just happens to be set against the world of big-wave surfing. Leading lady Marguerite Moreau seems well positioned for "A" film success, with her girl-next-door charm and a deliciously intelligent performance. Unfortunately, the film's limited release will force most consumers to wait for the video; but if you're in one of the film's theatrical markets, check it out on the big screen for the impact of some of the superb surfing sequences.
