Movie Review

Not quite a drama and not quite an all-out action movie, "Unleashed" stars Jet Li as a man who is essentially a dog, a being who has been caged and fed like an animal since he was a child and now is a ruthless killing machine upon command. While trained to kill and destroy, there is still a good person in him somewhere, and when he manages to escape from his master he begins to realize what humanity has to offer. That being said, there is still plenty of punching, kicking and killing for Li fans to drool over. Full movie review »

I just saw the unleashed movie and I'm not sure if I liked the movie or not. The acting wasn't that bad, and there is a moral to this movie about humanity, but there's really nothing about the movie that's different. It reminds me of all the other action/drama movies like Gladiator, Soldier (Kurt Russel), and Lionheart (Van Damme) that I've seen.

The action in Unleashed seems to be done specifically tailored to Jet Li's fighting style, meaning that whenever you see a fight, Li does his martial arts the same typical way from his other martial art movies, so you're not really seeing anything new here (at least the Matrix influenced bullet time effect). Besides the typical action sequences, there seems to be some plot holes missing. For instance, they talk about Li's character being taken when he was a little boy by Bob Hoskin's character to be his loyal servant, but they don't show why and how Li became so skilled in martial arts. Once again, this is typical Hollywood for ya. Just because Li is oriental, that he automatically is a professional martial arts expert. Another missing plot hole is at the very end of the movie, they don't mention what happens to Bob Hoskin's character or his men (did they escape or are they facing their punishment that Li's character terribly wants?).

In conclusion, Unleashed is not a positive movie for Hollywood in terms of breaking stereotypes and creating new ways for filmmaking, instead they seemed to focus more with combining martial arts and cheap, unrealistic plots that’s degrading for certain individuals particularly for Asians.
