September 5, 2007I'm neither a fan of trite romantic comedies nor cutesy "pet" movies. We can agree that this clearly wasn't a typical romantic comedy, but I hold that it wasn't a pet movie, either. "Year of the Dog" has dogs in it. Duh. That doesn't make it cutesy, or enjoyable only to the dog-owning portion of the population. None of the jokes rely on any inside "oh, MY dog does that!" humor. The one shot of a dog peeing on the floor was less about making the audience laugh than about showing what a nightmare Peggy's house has become after the adoption of 15 shelter dogs.
And, without giving anything away, you thought there was no denoument in this movie? No knowledge gained by the main character? Did you even HEAR Peggy's final voice-over monologue?
This movie has flaws, to be sure, but I think you judged it a bit harshly.
Also: Peggy's dog's name is "Pencil," not Shiloh, and Laura Dern's character is her sister-in-LAW, not her sister.
