Movie Review

Russel Crowe's starpower is put to the test in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, as he is the only major actor among a cast of almost all men. Much like his character, the odds are mightily against him, as sea-fairing, Napoleon-era films rarely do well. Luckily, there are always exceptions. Full movie review »

I just came from the theather, where I watched this movie. I'd like to bring into this conversation the same perpective as I brang into "Pitch Black's". The consept of deliberate and offensive ill behavior exists in this movie in the form of the french captain. He ridicules the ship "Surprise" by repeating surprice attacks thus trying to denounce the respect and pride of the ship and it's crew. I don't believe that this phenomenon in reality existed in the early 19th century. During that period the integrity and one's reputation meant everything in social life and society status. Person who deliberately attacks others to achieve their disrespect means that there is hate. Hate means that there is fear. And fear means that there is weakness in capability of living and managing one's life in the world. In order to maintain a status of a captaign in the 19th century french society, a person must had been independent, strong willed and disciplined, in other words, like an a well formed adult. So what is this kind of character plot doing in an otherwise factual story of this era? This belongs into this modern era, where in the western world people only care for their limitless desires and the victory from the competition with others. The movie was mostly a factual presentation of that era. In the end it took a less moderate approache and solved the plot with a lot of convincing and entertaining action.

Definitely not an A, but a solid B. Plot was a little thin. Characters are very good. Absolutely no love interest, which is quite rare I think.

This is not the classic action/adventure that we movie goers have grown to fear. Crowe's performance was quiet goos, and the movie showed true character. It was more of a character movie, not so much a war movie, but the battles were just as thrilling as ever. I would like to say that the Doctor (played by Paul Brittany) was possibly the best part. He was a good offset to Crowe's roughness as a sea captain. In more simpler terms: THIS IS A REALLY GOOD MOVIE!!

After Pirates, I did not expect much. But I was totally thrilled with Master and Commander. It started slowly, but improved quickly. The characters felt real, the battles were graphically realistic, and the life on a ship was portrayed accurately. The ending said "sequel" to me and I hope they do! It was an amazing movie.

Compared this film with Pirate of the Carribean- M&C is not glammed up. I like the realistic approach that Peter Weir took. The lighting of the film was a bit dark but that adds to its non Hollywood appraoch. Dialogue was not easy to follow for us Americans. Love Russell's acting. I give it a 7 out of 10. Great historic drama.
