God Bless America Movie Review

"Who you're killing next? Do you take requests? Because I was thinking maybe some Kardashians, my gym coach. People who give high fives. Really, any jock. Twihards. People who talk about punk rock."

That single quote sums up the new violent satire God Bless America all too well. The Bobcat Goldthwait movie is Office Space meets Falling Down, American Dreamz meets any Quentin Tarantino film. It isn't as good as any of those movies - save for the forgettable American Dreamz - but it is a satisfying release for anyone who rolls their eyes at reality shows, pop culture or political correctness.

"I only wanna kill people who deserve to die...People who use rockstar as an adjective. As in rockstar parking... People who pound energy drinks all day... People who use the term edgy, in your face, or extreme."

God Bless America is a like it or hate it movie. The movie is a scathing rebuke of western society that relies on its ability to spark something within its audience. The dialogue doesn't amaze like in a Tarantino movie, but it hits on things that we've all thought at some point. It offers the opportunity to live vicariously through fictional characters, where punishing the idiots and assholes and annoying people has no consequences.

Then again, it could be seen as a cheap, violent comedy where unlikable people kill other unlikable people with no redeemable value.

Like it or hate it. Love is unlikely. Hate is a strong possibility.

God Bless America isn't a great movie. It isn't for everyone. But it's entertaining and at times hits the spot. The question is: are your behaviors the reason why this movie exists in the first place?

Review by Erik Samdahl unless otherwise indicated.
