The Immortals Trailer: Worth an Eternity?
The trailer for the stylish new swords-and-sandals epic Immortals is now online, and it looks… interesting. From director Tarsem Singh (The Cell) and written by Charles Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanide, the movie is a hyper-stylized R-rated action film with bold speeches, beautiful women, angry men, angrier Gods and a whole lot of violence.
The first time I watched the trailer, I wasn’t blown away, but having watched it a second time… I’m looking forward to this movie. The action looks pretty cool, and the money shot with the four arrows at the end of the trailer is pretty bad ass.
It also provides an opportunity to see the new Superman Henry Cavill in action. He stars alongside Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luka Evans, Kellan Lutz, with John Hurt and Mickey Rourke.
Immortals looks like it falls between 300 and Clash of the Titans, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. Both of those films were huge hits, but audiences will likely perceive it as a 300-wannabe. Furthermore, with the bad taste of Titans – which has much more brand recognition – it will also look like a movie attempting to capitalize on that film’s success.
Those perceptions are hard to shrug off. Relativity Media is going to have it’s hands full convincing audiences otherwise, but the trailer – with its slick visuals and powerful score – goes a long way. What do you think?
Immortals opens on November 11, 2011.
