The Best Superhero Movies of the 21st Century

No. 3. X2: X-Men United (2003)

After the success of X-Men, Bryan Singer returned to direct the sequel – which was better in every way. Delving deeper into Wolverine’s back story while presenting the rise of anti-mutant sentiment in the government, X2 delivers a great story and features several great action sequences (Nightcrawler’s invasion of the White House, the assault on the school and the fight between Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike come to mind). Anyone who says this movie isn’t good is out of their mind.

No. 2. Unbreakable (2000)

Easily the most controversial movie on this list, M. Night Shyamalan’s follow-up to The Sixth Sense is one of my all-time favorite movies. Unbreakable is a love-it-or-hate-it film, but Shyamalan paints a bleak but compelling tale of good versus evil set against the real world. While the twist ending is understated, the best part about the movie is that most audiences never realized it was about a superhero, or inspired by comic books.

No. 1. The Dark Knight (2008)

In 2008, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight opened to massive buzz, largely thanks to the unfortunate death of Heath Ledger. Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker earned him a postmortem Oscar, and Nolan’s crime masterpiece went on to make more money than only Titanic (and now Avatar). The Dark Knight is easily the best superhero movie of the 21st century. Hell, it’s the best superhero movie ever.
