The 10 Best Johnny Depp Movies

No. 7. Finding Neverland (2004)

In this excellent movie by Marc Foster, Johnny Depp plays J.M. Barrie, a successful playwright who is struggling with the realization his latest play is a bomb and his marriage is on the rocks. Then, one day, he discovers Sylvia (Kate Winslet), a widow and mother of four young boys. He befriends her and becomes an integral part in the boys’ lives. Unfortunately, while his vision of “Peter Pan” begins to be realized, his devotion to this second family causes trouble in other aspects of his life.

No. 6. Rango (2011)

This animated film has Johnny Depp voicing the title character, a domesticated lizard who finds himself stranded in a seedy desert town where nothing is what it seems. A cross between a Clint Eastwood western and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but technically made for kids, Rango is imaginative, unique, witty, funny and exciting.

It is also one of Johnny Depp’s few good movies of the last decade.

No. 5. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Johnny Depp was a celebrated actor before 2003, but he was hardly a household draw. That all changed when he played Captain Jack Sparrow in the unlikely box office blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean, which launched a massive new franchise and made Depp one of the highest-paid – and most sought-after – actors in the world.

Unlike its sequels, Pirates of the Caribbean is also a very good movie.

No. 4. Ed Wood (1994)

One of three Tim Burton collaborations on this list, Ed Wood is a “mostly true” biopic of the legendary director, often considered to be the worst director of all time – well, at least until Uwe Boll came onto the scene.

Funny and brilliantly acted with gusto by Depp, Ed Wood is an often overlooked drama-comedy with an all-star cast and a creative look at one of the most painfully imaginative men in the history of cinema.
