The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2014
5. Boyhood
Considered by many to be the best movie of the year, Boyhood turned out to be a three-hour slog that is more gimmick than actual movie, where not a lot happens except the actors grow older in front of our eyes. It’s not the most disappointing movie of 2015, but it is the most overrated.
4. The Monuments Men
Directed by George Clooney and starring an A-list cast including Matt Damon, John Goodman, Cate Blanchett and Bill Murray, this World War II drama was originally expected to be an Oscar contender in 2013… but then it got bumped to February due to inconsistent storytelling, weak character development and confusing tonal swings (is it a comedy? a drama? a thriller? I still don’t know).
3. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
As a huge fan of the Jack Ryan movies–hell, even the Ben Affleck-starring The Sum of All Fears isn’t that bad–I was extremely disappointed to discover that Paramount had rebooted the character with a generic action plot and even more generic Russian villain, completely abandoning what made the character and his stories so good in the first place.
2. Exodus: Gods and Kings
Ridley Scott is one of my favorite filmmakers, and Christian Bale among today’s leading actors, but the Gladiator director misses the mark completely with this clunky, boring and poorly cast story about Moses and Ramses where, by the end, I just wanted the Red Sea to drown everyone involved.
1. Maleficent
It’s not completely surprising that Maleficent made a lot of money, but it is stunning that some people actually enjoyed this movie, a retelling of Sleeping Beauty that strips away everything that was interesting about that fairy tale and subjects the audience to one sleep-inducing scene after the next. Maleficent had promise, but sometimes it’s better to let the bad guys be the bad guys.
