The 34 Movies to See in 2016
25. Demolition – April 8
Jake Gyllenhaal attempts to overcome the death of his wife by completely renovating his house. That doesn’t sound very exciting, but did I mention Jake Gyllenhaal? The movie is also directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) and co-stars Naomi Watts.
24. Jane Got a Gun – January 29
Don’t mess with Natalie Portman. Just don’t. In this western that also stars Ewan McGregor and Joel Edgerton, a woman defends her outlaw husband from a gang of vigilantes. Yes, please.
23. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi – January 15
Michael Bay directs this serious action-thriller that depicts the events that occurred during the controversial Battle for Benghazi, in which an American ambassador was killed. Bay may not be a critical darling, but if executed well, 13 Hours could serve as proof he’s still capable of directing a coherent action movie.
22. Independence Day Resurgence – June 24
I love ID4, but did we really need a sequel to this feel-good disaster flick 20 years later and without Will Smith? Director Roland Emmerich and much of the rest of the cast (Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox) return, but only time will tell whether this resurgence is worth it.
21. Central Intelligence – June 17
Kevin Hart hasn’t made very many good movies, but the pint-sized funnyman’s pairing with tank-sized Dwayne Johnson seems like genius, at least on paper. Early trailers have been promising as well, as Johnson plays an overly enthusiastic CIA agent who forces office worker Hart to get into all kinds of dangerous situations.
