20. The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist – June 10

The Conjuring was one of the scarier movies of 2013, and with James Wan returning with stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, there’s no reason not to expect more frights in this second helping.

19. Story of Your Life – release TBD

From the director of the excellent Sicario and Passengers comes this sci-fi thriller about a linguist who is recruited by the military to determine whether the arrival of a fleet of aliens is a threat, or something else. Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker star.

18. The Secret Life of Pets – July 8

From the directors of Despicable Me comes this cute-looking animated flick, about what pets do when their owners aren’t at home. In the age of cat videos, it’s amazing a movie like this is only hitting theaters now.

17. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – October 21

The first Jack Reacher wasn’t terrific, but it was a solid thriller that, after a successful international run, deserved a sequel… and a sequel it’s getting. Tom Cruise returns to the starring role, while reliable Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai) takes over directing duties.

16. Captain America: Civil War – May 6

The last Captain America movie made our Top 10 Movies of 2014 list, but following the underwhelming Avengers: Age of Ultron, it’s hard to get too excited about this sequel—which features a slew of superheroes—despite the Russo brothers returning to directing duties. In this one, Tony Stark/Iron Man serves as the antagonist as Captain America is forced to fight for liberty of superheroes. #superherolivesmatter
