The 34 Movies to See in 2016
10. Hail, Caesar! – February 5
The Coen brothers return with yet another quirky crime comedy, this one about a 1950s-era Hollywood star (George Clooney) who is kidnapped and held for ransom as the studio scrambles to cover up the crime. Oh, and get its leading man back.
9. Suicide Squad – August 5
As Warner Bros. and DC Comics attempt to build their own comic book universe, I’m surprised that they are introducing such a risky product so early. About a group of DC villains—including the Joker (played by Jared Leto)—who are recruited to execute a series of black ops missions in exchange for clemency—Suicide Squad will take a notably darker tone that anything Marvel has put out recently. Needless to say, I am intrigued.
8. The Witch – February 26
A hit at Sundance in 2015, The Witch looks downright mesmerizing/disturbing/frightening/scary as shit.
7. Star Trek Beyond – July 22
Looking to put the critically panned Star Trek Into Darkness in the rear-view mirror, director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) takes over for J.J. Abrams and pits the Enterprise crew against a new alien race lightyears away from the security of the Federation. While the first teaser trailer was greeted with mixed enthusiasm, the filmmakers are well aware they need to step it up.
6. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – November 18
David Yates, who directed four of the Harry Potter movies, returns to the franchise in this New York-based prequel, written by author J.K. Rowling. Enough said.
