The 34 Movies to See in 2016
5. X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27
If the first trailer is any indication, X-Men: Apocalypse may be the comic book movie to beat as Bryan Singer pits the X-Men (and Magneto and Mystique, once again played by Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence) against the world’s first mutant, the ruthless and powerful Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaac).
4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – December 16
With the Star Wars franchise back on track with Episode VII, Disney’s investment gets tested in a new way with its first spin-off. Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) directs this prequel, set before or in parallel to A New Hope, in which a small squadron of rebels attempt to steal the blueprints to the Death Star (you know, those blueprints that Luke Skywalker later uses to destroy the Death Star). Sounds good to me.
3. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25
As a huge fan of the underappreciated Man of Steel, I’m definitely looking forward to this sequel, though Warner Bros. is doing its best to make me nervous: rushing to get to the Justice League movie by introducing way too many characters, using Doomsday as a villain, and questionable trailers. But I love the central concept, of an angry Bruce Wayne deciding that Superman is a threat, and so only time will tell what director Zack Snyder has in store for us.
2. Silence – release TBD
Martin Scorsese finally brings his passion project to life, that of two Jesuit priests (Liam Neeson and Adam Driver) who travel to Japan in the 17th century. Their presence is not appreciated, but a new Martin Scorsese drama most certainly is.
1. Jason Bourne 5 – July 29
The Bourne Legacy sort of sucked, but it also didn’t feature Jason Bourne, Matt Damon or director Paul Greengrass. All three of those elements are back in play in this fifth movie, and as a result, this as-of-yet-titled Jason Bourne movie is my most anticipated movie of 2015.
