The 30 Movies You Have to See in 2018

20. The Equalizer 2

Not everyone loved it, but the first Equalizer was a blast. As long as Denzel Washington kicks just as much ass this go-around, I’m game.
End-of-year impression: decent.

19. The Predator

The last movie, Predators, was underappreciated, but Shane Black (The Nice Guys, Iron Man 3) has been tasked with rebooting the franchise. Expect some good action and plenty of dark humor.
End-of-year impression: pretty terrible.

18. Ready Player One

It’s been over a decade since Steven Spielberg directed a sci-fi film, so it’s easy to forget that he’s one of the most accomplished sci-fi directors of all time. Ready Player One’s trailers haven’t exactly blown me away, but if there is any director who could pull off a movie like this, it’s Spielberg.
End-of-year impression: pretty terrible.

17. Mary, Queen of Scots

Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie star in this historical drama about Mary Stuart’s attempts to overthrow her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. The cast is great, though neither director Josie Rourke nor writer Beau Willimon have a lot of credits to their name.
End-of-year impression: pretty good but not great.

16. Red Sparrow

This one will test Jennifer Lawrence’s true box office drawing power. Red Sparrow has an awesome teaser trailer, but it also looks like a less flashy version of Atomic Blonde, which underperformed in 2017.
End-of-year impression: decent if forgettable.
