Indie darling Greta Gerwig, who won praise for her role in Ben Stiller's Greenberg, stars in Lola Versus, an amusing and fast-paced drama about a young woman whose life is turned upside down when her fiancée freaks out and leaves her shortly before their wedding, forcing her back into the up-and-down reality of single life.

As a perennially single person, I can relate.

Written and directed by Daryl Wein, Lola Versus is fun, cute and engaging. The movie is one of those projects that could have so easily been consumed by the desire to be all "indie", with random animations thrown into the narrative just to be unique and a forgettable ending for the sake of doing something different, even though most every indie drama ends the same way. Wein makes the smart decision to sit back and let his characters and actors do the hard work.

The movie rests largely on the shoulders of Gerwig, who is as adorable as she was in Greenberg but unrestrained by the dark, depressing nature that plagued that film. She is a flawed but realistic individual who makes plenty of stupid mistakes during her journey, but who is relatable and likable nonetheless.

The rest of the cast adds color to her adventure. Joel Kinnaman and Hamish Linklater are good in their respective roles, but Zoe Lister Jones steals the show with her slightly awkward, offbeat performance as Lola's best friend. She's funny, even over-the-top at times, but never feels out of place against the rest of the story.

Lola Versus isn't a groundbreaking movie, but it is well written, well acted and entertaining. A great cast and a strong performance by Greta Gerwig make this movie one of the more overlooked films of 2012.
