Ted Review

Now available on Blu-ray and DVD (Buy on Amazon)

It took me a while to see Ted. I saw the movie in early August, several weeks after most people had tired of raving about it. It took me even longer to review it, as it's now December at time of writing. As a result, I apologize in advance for the brevity of this review, and its lack of detail.

Ted is a funny, cleverly written comedy. The movie captures the essence of a bromance extremely well. Guys are quick to forgive, but they don't forget. If you do something stupid, they'll remind you until you're dying breath. Not out of cruelty, but because whatever the hell you did was funny, at least in hindsight. In accordance, Ted relies on running jokes more than most. Thankfully, the jokes are funny to begin with.

Wahlberg and writer/director Seth MacFarlane, who voices the title character, play off each other extremely well. They love each other and they piss each other off, but only because they know one another so well. The friendship feels real, even though one-half is a computerized teddy bear. Mila Kunis also fits well into the mix.

Ted does lose some of its luster in the third act as MacFarlane tries to give his movie more plot than it ever needed (the subplot surrounding Flash Gordon is more than adequate), but that's not uncommon among comedies. Despite this, Giovanni Ribisi plays an adequately creepy villain.

Ted isn't without its faults, but it is still one of the funniest movies of the year.
