You Hurt My Feelings Review
Capsule Review: Writer/director Nicole Holofcener delivers comedic charm with You Hurt My Feelings, an entertaining, amusing, and sharply written comedy-drama starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tobias Menzies. The movie centers around a situation where an author (Louis-Dreyfus) discovers that her therapist husband (Menzies) has been lying to her–that he loves her new book when he actually hates it.
Both Louis-Dreyfus and Menzies are terrific; their chemistry is gold, but more importantly they both lean into their somewhat mundane characters with gusto. The supporting cast, highlighted by David Cross and Amber Tamblyn, are also great.
Ultimately, You Hurt My Feelings isn’t the funniest movie. It isn’t the most dramatic. It isn’t mind-blowingly memorable. And yet its full of charm and vibrancy, hitting on the positives and negatives of white lies in a realistic, lived-in approach. Recommended.
