12 Monkeys Movie Synopsis & Plot

In 1997, 99 percent of the world's population will die from a mysterious virus. The remaining one percent will be forced underground and only several years later, in 2035, will man be able to determine what happened. With the power of time travel, the remaining humans have the ability to send men back in time and figure out, and stop, the virus. All they know is that a gang called the 12 Monkeys is responsible...

Cole is the volunteer that is chosen for the mission. He is violent, and a little psychotic, but has stamina greater than no other man... and he has a childhood memory of the day the virus was released, of a man and a woman running through the airport, and the man gets shot...

Cole arrives in 1996 where he takes up the alliance of psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly.   Several years earlier, although only a few days for Cole, Railly met Cole in a mental hospital, where she branded his warnings of a doomsday virus and 'the Army of the 12 Monkeys' delusional.  But there's something about him, and his story, that will bring her to his side... perhaps it is the photo of Cole from World War 1... perhaps it is the WW1 bullet found in a fresh wound... perhaps it is the realization of the 12 Monkeys' existence... Either way, it's all going to end up in an airport, where a man and a woman are running for their lives, and everyone else's.

MOVIE REVIEW

The sci-fi genre... aliens, space travel, phenomenons... and time travel. That's what 12 Monkeys is about: time travel, although it's not as sci-fi related as it appears. Bruce Willis is a time traveler, which makes 12 Monkeys a sci-fi movie, but the entirety of it is not as complex as one would think. In fact, every scene that takes place in 2035 is just a souped-up shell that makes 12 Monkeys look a lot more technical than it is.
