In 18th century France, on the verge of the French Revolution, a young woman, Jeanne de la Motte-Valois leaves her adopted home in search of her supposed royal heritage, but in the process becomes involved in a situation that includes a diamond necklace, her deceitful husband, and Marie Antoinette.
