The American President - Movie Synopsis & Plot
His name was Andrew Shepherd. Hers was Sydney Wade. And they are going on a date. The only complications are this: He is the President of the United States and the date is a White House ball with the French President and his wife.
Looking for reelection, Shepherd is placed in a predicament... Three years earlier, he had won the public's heart with the death of his wife but now, with a girlfriend that is crowding the front page, his idealistic standards are seemingly failing. His opposition in the race for Presidency, Senator Rumson, is attacking his innocent affair as anti-patriotism and is winning the war. Shepherd's aids are begging with him to do something about it, to stand against Rumson, or lose Sydney. But what Shepherd himself can't understand is that a seemingly innocent relationship, which has no correlation with his role as the most powerful man in the world, can destroy his chances for reelection.
