The English Patient is a compelling story of a man, his face burned away, bedridden in an Italian villa. His memories return slowly, taking him back to World War 2, where he was a cartographer in Egypt. His affair with a married woman, ending in tragedy, is played out, through the high points, the low points, and anything in-between.

The all-around winner of the 1996 Academy Awards, "The English Patient" is a timeless love story set against the bleak conditions of World War II. Surprisingly, the movie features very little warfare but plenty of serious drama; the end result is a finely acted, well made picture that might just be a tad overrated.
