The Thirteenth Floor Movie Synopsis & Plot

In a small laboratory in Los Angeles, a man named Hannon Fuller made a world... on a computer chip: Los Angeles, 1937. Inside, thousands of people live and interact as if they were real, unaware of the truth. And on top of that world is Fuller's real world, Los Angeles, 1999.

When Fuller is butchered, suspicion is placed on good friend and ex-employee of Fuller, Douglas Hall. When he hears of the murder, and realizes that he is a suspect, he can't believe it... but he can't totally deny it. On the morning after, he woke up in his apartment, not knowing what he had been doing the night before. And in his hamper is a bloody shirt.

Things get stranger when Douglas meets the daughter of Fuller he never knew existed. Overwhelmed by her beauty, but suspicious of her intentions, he sets out to learn the truth. While following her, the police Detective on the case is following him, and the only place Douglas can find the truth may be the 1937 world Fuller invented. But what if they're already inside?

MOVIE REVIEW

When seeing the previews for The Thirteenth Floor, most would say, "Been there, done that." There have already been a couple of virtual reality movies, including eXistenZ and most notably the big hit The Matrix. The Thirteenth Floor, of course, didn't copy the formula since it came out around the same time; the problem is that it came out around the same time, and last. After seeing The Matrix, with its accelerated action and spiffy graphics, The Thirteenth Floor may seem amateur, but in truth, the only similarity is the common theme of "Questioning reality." Otherwise, they cannot be compared.
